Tattoo Removal FAQ
What is the process for laser tattoo removal?
PicoSure is the world’s first picosecond laser and the only advanced tattoo removal laser with PressureWave technology that uses intense light to break up the tattoo pigment into tiny particles. The laser light is adjusted to the ideal wavelength so it can target the pigment molecules deep under the skin. As the pigment molecules take in the laser light, they'll break into tiny fragments. Your body's lymphatic system will then handle these fragments as waste, excreting them from the body over a period of a month or so.
Can colored tattoo ink be removed?
Yes, the PicoSure laser is able to work on all colors of tattoo ink. It's most effective on black, deep blue, and yellow shades, but any color pigment can be addressed. The most difficult colors to remove tend to be red and green.
What type of pain control is provided?
The PicoSure laser is less painful than older tattoo removal options. To keep patients as comfortable as possible, numbing medication is applied topically ahead of the procedure. You can expect a sensation similar to a snapping of the skin during treatment, but this is quick and is generally quite well tolerated. The pain lasts for only a very brief period since the treatment is usually only a few minutes in length.
What can you expect after treatment?
After treatment, the treatment area will be covered with a soothing lotion and then a bandage will be applied. The skin may feel warm for a day or two. You may also experience redness and blistering, but these will resolve over the next week. Rancho Wellness Aesthetic will give you specific aftercare guidelines to help in rapid and effective healing.
How many treatments are needed?
Every treatment session targets the layer of tattoo pigment that's nearest to the skin's surface. Each layer of pigment must be addressed individually for full tattoo removal. It typically takes five or more sessions (scheduled around six weeks apart) for tattoo removal, but this does vary by patient and tattoo.
How does PicoSure compare to other tattoo removal procedures?
PicoSure is much faster than traditional tattoo removal. It uses picosecond (one trillionth of one second) technology that allows for treatment 100 times as fast as traditional nanosecond tattoo removal lasers. This increased rate of ink break-up means that treatment is much quicker and that less total office visits are needed.
